Welcome to the 2016-2017 year!

This year has already started off with a beautiful bang!!!

Hello Longfellow High School Staff,


I would like to introduce you to the Broadway High School Career & College Updates. This newsletter will communicate the events and activities going on for the month as well as opportunities that students can access (college open houses, scholarships, summer opportunities, job openings, etc.). The goal is to make the newsletter be available on the Broadway website as well so that students and families can access the information outside of school.


I will email this letter to staff each month and will post for students to read. I will print on an as needed basis. If you have other suggestions as to how to get this information out to you and the students please let me know.

The Role of the Career & College Coordinator

The Career & College Center (CCC) is a resource for students as well as teachers and staff. The purpose of the CCC is to help young people make their plans for success after graduation – whether that means attending college, receiving training, entering the workforce, or obtaining other opportunities. Shavaun Kerf  is the part-time Career & College Coordinator (CCC) at Broadway High School and is available on Tuesday 8:30-1:30pm, Wednesday-Friday from 11am-4pm. Shavaun’s role is to provide resources for all students, as well as targeted support for those who need extra help exploring careers or navigating the college process. Shavaun will also track individual student progress to ensure that all graduating seniors have a plan for life after high school.

Make an Appointment

If a student needs to talk to Shavaun, she can stop in Room 118 A to make a request for an appointment. Shavaun  has an appointment request sheet on the outside of the office for students to access. Most appointments will take place during Advisory. For appointments that need to take place outside of Advisory please take into account your classes. Choose a time that makes the most since to miss time from. Teachers have the final say of whether a student will be excused to miss class time to meet with Shavaun .

Using the Career & College Center

Passes: The CCC is located in room 118A and will collaborate with Lindsey Walters, the High School Counselor. Students can use the CCC before or after school but will be expected to have a pass from a teacher during class time. If a student is needed for an individual appointment, Shavaun will either send a pass or go to the classroom to talk with a student. Teachers have the final say whether a student can miss class to be in the CCC or not.

Sign In: Students will be asked to sign in with their name/ID # on a sheet provided at Shavaun ’s desk. The purpose of sign in is for AchieveMpls data collection and will only be used to asses who is (and is not) using the CCC.

Monthly Schedule and Updates: Shavaun will provided an newsletter the first week of each month and email it to staff and post for students called “Broadway High School Career & College Updates. This newsletter will communicate the events and activities going on that month and opportunities that students can access (college open houses, scholarships, summer opportunities, job openings, etc.). The goal is to make the newsletter be available on the Broadway website as well so that students and families can access the information outside of school.

Fall College Planning Timeline:

Seniors…

  • Improve your grades

  • Research college options, determine requirements

  • Visit a college campus

  • Determine if you need to take ACT, Accuplacer, or ASVAB exam

  • Apply to colleges, be aware of deadlines

  • Attend the National College Fair at the Minneapolis Convention Center on October 21st from 4:30pm- 8pm

  • Ask teachers/counselor for letters of recommendation if required

  • Start your college essay if required

  • Start your scholarship essay

  • Begin thinking about how you will pay for college

Juniors…

  • Know where you stand on completing graduation requirements

  • Improve your grades

  • Begin thinking about where you want to apply for college

  • Make a list of criteria you need from a college

  • Consider PSEO or D3 Programs to earn high school and college credit

  • Visit a college campus

  • Take a career interest inventory

  • Schedule an appointment to talk to your high school counselor
